Everimpact: Accurate Emissions Measurement for a Net Zero Future
Introduction to Everimpact
As regulatory demands such as the EU’s ETS Carbon Tax in 2024 and the Methane Tax in 2026 increase, the spotlight intensifies on companies and countries striving to achieve Net Zero emissions.
Everimpact understood that unreliable carbon emissions data burdens businesses with added costs while hindering progress towards Net Zero, and sought to deliver a solution that aims not only to curb emissions but accurately measure them.
Armed with cutting-edge technologies such as satellites, sensors, and AI, Everimpact delivers verifiable and precise emission measurements, helping businesses navigate regulatory changes and confidently reduce their environmental footprint, enabling vessels to realise substantial cost savings of up to €3.5 million per vessel.
The Founding Story
As former Directors at the United Nations (UN) with extensive experience managing projects on the most challenging global issues, Mathieu Carlier, Alain Retiere, and Jan Mattson first crossed paths in 2014 during a collaborative project with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Fifteen months later, a twist of fate brought them back together, towards a shared vision for unlocking the potential of reducing carbon emission in urban environments.
Everimpact emerged by combining Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mathieu’s expertise in deploying complex data systems and advising key opinion leaders and government bodies, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Alain’s technical prowess from founding two satellite agencies within the UN (UNOSAT and CLIMSAT), and Chairman Jan’s wealth of experience in transforming and scaling organisations.

With their diverse yet complementary skillsets, the team embarked on their mission to accelerate the journey towards Net Zero by building an unparalleled precision for carbon emissions measurement.
Early Beginnings
The initial few years saw Everimpact starting out in a completely different industry, developing their Carbon Measurement IoT Software for smart cities. Having scored several EU-funded Proof of Concepts (PoCs), the team validated their technology with government bodies across eight cities including Birmingham, London, and Belgium amongst others.
Their foray into Maritime was actually an unexpected turn of events. A pivotal moment emerged in 2020 when climate change thrust the maritime industry into focus and industry giants like Wilhelmsen, Mitsubishi, and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) reached out to Everimpact, requesting to have their technology adapted for maritime use - measuring greenhouse gases (GHG; including CO2, CH4, CO, NO, NO2 and SO2) directly in the exhaust stacks in ships.
The co-founders took a giant leap of faith, without any prior experience in maritime, diving further to learn more about the industry, understanding its challenges and adapting their solution concurrently.
Thankfully for the team, it was as though the stars aligned as they quickly recognised the synergy between their technological capabilities and the industry’s pressing issues, making it an obvious choice to pivot towards the maritime industry. Their transition was further bolstered as they were one of the eleven startups selected to participate in the first Google for Startups Accelerator program on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), further providing credibility to Everimpact’s solution and opening doors.
Growth
Despite being newcomers in the maritime industry, Everimpact’s progress quickly made up for these gaps as they continue to close deals with familiar names including Hitachi in Japan. That said, their journey into the maritime landscape was no easy feat. It took the team three long years of effort, gathering industry requirements, engaging stakeholders, initiating pilots, and rigorously testing in both controlled environments and actual ships, before scepticism transformed into success.
Today, the team proudly boasts pilot results of 10 - 20% lower fuel estimates, and have earned themselves the support and validation from key organisations, including class societies, certification bodies, and the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) - an LNG carriers coalition aimed at tackling methane slip; members include Shell, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), and CoolCo.
A key takeaway from the founding team revolves around the importance of reliable strategic partners, committed towards innovation. Wilhelmsen and Mitsubishi are two such partners that greatly accelerated Everimpact’s growth through their unwavering support, and forward-thinking approach, playing a significant role in attracting and retaining customers.
Evolving with real industry needs
With five new ships joining their Early Adopters Program, and sixteen prominent shipping companies coming together to pioneer the standard measurement for methane emissions, Everimpact continues to prioritise user feedback as a crucial part in their strategy.
The team continues developing plug-and-play solutions that cater to the needs of different teams from tech-savvy captains to busy engineers. In addition, they seek to reduce the steep learning curve of their system and ease the workload off clients’ teams through providing ready-made analytics dashboards, amongst others.
Needless to say, feedback fuels progress at Everimpact who continues to stay close to their users, refining and adapting their solutions to tackle real problems in the industry.
Partnering with MV
Everimpact’s unique journey has reinforced their belief in finding the right partners including like-minded investors who understand them right from the get-go.
Mathieu shares that,
“Motion Ventures has been more than just investors, they have been strategic partners who understand the depth and complexity of our mission. This close collaboration has been pivotal to our success, and it continues to drive the development and adoption of our technology within the maritime industry.”
The team also cites other key organisations and investors including the EU Commission, Asian Development Bank, IMC Ventures, Transport Capital, and Blue Star Group, as great supporters who have helped drive their journey thus far.
Looking Ahead
Everimpact intends to continually expand their presence in maritime, serving to bridge the gap between confronting regulatory changes, and doing so confidently and sustainability.
